I once read a quote that said something on the lines of "Where there are flies there is Buddha". I suppose what that is meant to mean is, wherever there is stench, death, squalor, and trash....Buddha is there. Not that there is beauty in everything as much, but that Buddha is all encompassing and exists everywhere and in everything...even where there are flies. Fear not my friends, this is not a religious post. This is about fruit flies.
About two weeks ago while sharing a nice glass of wine with my lovely girlfriend, a little fly sat on the lip of my wine glass and tumbled to what it surely thought it was it's death. Being a pro-life animalitarian on the lines of the Buddhist's love for all sacred living beings, I dipped my finger into my Cabernet Sauvignon and rescued the poor little bugger. After a drying off period my little friend flew off into the distance. Satisfied with good act of the day, I continued with my glass of wine feeling ever so self-righteous about my charity toward the animal kingdom and that I would be rewarded by deer, antelope, elephants and penguins walking up to me to eat out of my hand while lady bugs and butterflies perch on my shoulders just like those Jehovah's Witness pamphlets.
Days later...my good Karma toward the animal kingdom was rewarded by swarms of fruit flies in our kitchen. My little friend went off and spread the good news of good wine to all his little friends. Once the mama's got wind of this they started laying eggs galore into our kitchen. We got to the point where I couldn't enjoy a glass of wine without 10 of his little friends diving in for a sweet Barolo feast. My Buddhist love of fruit flies had come to an end.
After some research on the subject I found that fruit flies, much like myself, have an affinity towards wine and will, like me, do anything to get some. http://www.chow.com/stories/10751 Therein lied out totally anti-Buddhist solution to the problem - KILL EM ALL!
There are still around...but they are slowly dying. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while being nice to the animal kingdom is nice, they sure can be annoying and pesky and downright disgusting. I respect the Buddhist idea that all living things should be treated respectfully, lest you should be re-incarnated as a pesky beast, but sometimes good old fashion killing and disruption of the karmic cycle sure can be nice. Soooooo...cheers to wine with no flies in it...even if Buddha is there.
