Best Idea in a While

The Embarcadero will be closed from Bayview all the way to the Ferry Building this Sunday and a few more for the rest of the year. This is a spanktacular idea. We live in a country where driving and cars come first. It contributes to pollution, obesity, and a lack of social interaction, etc. Just look at any Farmers Market and how it contributes to vibrant communities that are in touch with their farmers and their neighbors. It really nourishes the soul. It strikes me when I'm in other countries how much more pedi-friendly other countries are (see picture of Munich's promenade that I distinctly remember). When I'm here and I do see it, i.e. street fairs, Belden Place, parts of Chinatown, etc., I get that much more in touch with my community. It makes me happy. Bravo SF! Only here would something like this happen. Imagine if they told LA drivers they couldn't drive part of LA - their eyes would pop out of their over sized glasses.

San Francisco is way behind the curve on this. NY has been implementing street closures all summer and spending huge dollars on making the city more bicycle and pedi friendly. Even LA seems to be ahead of San Francisco, at least in the way of spending money on these types of things. We had a huge plan, but someone named Mike Anderson (http://district5diary.blogspot.com/) contested and has it in a holding pattern for a couple of years.
